Wow, how great is this place already?

Matt and I have been waiting quite some time for SegaAge to open up, and I really have to say that it's off to an amazing start.  There are other Sega communities around, and while they offer some fantastic things, I really want to help set this place apart from any other Sega community.  We already have a killer database and collection tool, and I'm sure an Ezine isn't far away, but this will also be the only place where you'll be able to download free ROM dumps from Unreleased Sega games that Matt and I own.

First up:  Swamp Thing!

This game was created by Nuvision, who released Bimini Run on the Genesis as well as developed another unreleased Genesis title; Bean Ball Benny.

The game is unique to say the least.  In this side scrolling 2D platformer, you travel around as Swamp Thing while taking out baddies intent on destroying the environment.  During the game, you are able to take the form of various objects (like a leaf, log, and apple) to help you in keeping the forest clean.

This game was displayed at a CES show, and for one reason or another, was never finished or released.  This proto locks up at the end of the first level, but it gives you a great idea of what the game would have looked like.

I hope you all enjoy, and if you are just seeing this site for the first time, please, take a look around and stay for a while.  With all of the collectors here, this is bound to be an amazing resource for Sega knowledge, we could use all the help we can get!

Now Dain, how about some shiny knew dumper icons for me and Matt?

Note:  The maximum size a file can be for SA's attached files is 1 MB.  Since this file is 4 MB, I have to use Megaupload.  Please re-upload if possible, I'll be sure to do the same!

Although incomplete, this game is absolutely worth a play. It's a real shame that this game never saw a release as it was shaping up to be an interesting title.

Enjoy SA!

Man, what a horrible game! lol. Okay I know it wasn't finished and it may have turned out a lot better than that, but if that's anything to go off I am glad it never saw an official release. Putting that aside though, it is always very interesting and awesome to get to play a proto, thanks for making it possible!

Man, that's awesome! I've been wanting to try this ever since I first heard about it. It really is too bad that it was never finished.

Mark has been holding off on releasing some stuff for a while, and it was with the idea that we could set SA apart from some of the other communities out there with some unique releases.  Anything we can do to bring more attention to the site!

Yeah, as Matt said, we've been hanging onto this one waiting for SegaAge to open up. We really want this to be the premier place for Sega collectors and information, and this proto was relatively cheap (I think $530), so we thought it would serve as a sort of housewarming present to those checking out SA for the first time.

I see no reason why it wouldn't.  Seeing that it fires up in an emulator it should work with the ED without an issue.

Yeah! Thanks Mark and Beagle!

Will be playing it tomorrow, but I have a question...if it freezes at the end of stage 1, could there be a chance that by "fixing" the bug that causes the freeze, that later stages might become available? Considering it's a 4MB file (around 32megabit), one round seems to be too big for that size. So maybe there are other stages inside the ROM?

That's an excellent question, but it's something that we've looked into with poor results (unfortunately).

Having run into the glitch, we immediately enlisted the help of Game Genie Wizard Hybrid.  Using the codes he created, he was able to scale the dreaded "Invisible Wall."  What he found beyond it was a host of garbled graphics.  It appears as though there's nothing there, but maybe someone could pick it apart with a hex-editor and see if there are any hidden gems in the mix.

I think I'm gonna dig through the ROM. Was this game dumped from an SRAM developer cart or something? There is no way they were going to publish a 32mbit game in 1991. If they were, well, that's probably the reason it was canceled.

Edit: One whole third of the ROM is padding bytes. I can't find anything neat with a hex editor though and I don't really feel like disassembling this beast...

2nd edit: The ROM is just overdumped. The actual size of the proto is 4mbit (512kb). I checked the "mirrored" copies in the dump but they're all identical to the first dump from 0 to $80000.

Even more stuff: Check out these interviews with the guys that founded Microsmiths, the people that developed Swamp Thing:

Not a lot about Swamp Thing but some stuff about Nuvision...
