I modified my sega game gear for TV output, and its sweeeeet.

Check out my short youtube video of it:

It was an easy mod, I ordered the board from a hobby developer in Australia.

The board fits nicely into an available area under the cart connector. The video signal replaces one of the audio channels in the headphone jack, so that there is no modification to the case.

That's neat, do you think you will actually use it much?

Probably not a whole lot, why do you ask ?
Although I may not use it alot, that doesn't mean it was not worth it.

I can now add a small LCD screen, and replace the old screen, Im planning on doing that at some point.
These small screens can be purchased cheap from DealExtreme or eBay and have composite video input.
It will probably improve the battery life since the fluorescent tube will be removed, and will look 10 times better.

Yes mr. british columbia you mentioned that in your video.  It uses a bh7236af video encoder that does rgb, s-video and composite.

Just be aware if you add an LCD screen you won't get the full screen image when playing Game Gear games. I have a post on SMSpower somewhere, I tried to be a smart-arse and purchased a 4.25inch screen that claimed to have "zoom function". It wasn't zoom function lol, it was widescreen to letterbox.....bastards. Anyway with Master System ported games (MM Castle of Illusion) it looks fantastic. I have also made a consolized GG using the same board (from Viletim) where the cartslot has been re-located so that the cart top loads through the where the screen was and has 1 and 2 player controller ports.

If you want better battery life do the NDSi backlight mod, again on SMSpower, I have added a thread there. I haven't finished mine yet (just recently become a Dad), but someone did it to theirs and it looks pretty good!

Oh right, I forgot that the picture isnt full screen. This isnt a problem on a big TV screen, but I would be sad if my 4" LCD screen was not fully utilized.
Its great to know someone else who has done the same modification. Thanks for the tips too.

The board is capable of giving both s-video and composite (yellow RCA), however I decided to use only the comosite output, so thats how it connects to the TV.

Cool stuff! Mike Matei from cinemassacre just got one of these made from Richard DaLuz -- the dude that made the Super Genatari and the Nintoaster. He even added a Master System controller with a start button:

Hey,
Yeah, I saw Mike Matei's new Game Gear video when it was posted a couple days ago and I was like "no way".
We have the exact same board from Tim in Australia, crazy. Its a nice board, and so easy to install.

Nice vid, and install. I like the sega master system controller port, very nice.

Thanks for the message.

I'm interested in doing this or getting this done. Does this require an early release GG or will any GG do? Also, would the GG need to be in good working order, i.e., working screen and sound caps?

This mod can be done on either the 1-asic or 2-asic Game Gear models.

The screen wouldnt necessarily need to be working, nor the sound capacitor. The developer doensnt recommend installing this mod on a Game Gear without replacing the main board's capacitors first. I've replaced the caps on my main board before installing the GGTV board.
