Here it is, these are all the games from the US, Japan, and Europe that will NOT work outside of their home region. Only way to get these games to work is with a Modified System, Converter, or Game Genie with specific codes to bypass the region lock. List does not include Korean, Russian, or any Pirate games.

****** - signifies games with alternate title or slightly modified version depending on region.

Great stuff. I might suggest doing something (italics?) to distinguish the games with a savegame function, since those won't really be properly playable through a Game Genie.

Pretty sure requesting a sticky with what appears to be an attitude won't help this get stickied. Just send a PM to samspade or another mod with a polite request

Not an attitude, just frustration of months of trying to get this stickied, all caps are mostly for any mod to definitely see the request and not just skim over, not trying to appear pissed or with an attitude...... Theres been like 20 different posts about what region game is this and that, when this one topic can easily solve all those questions

Ill message him, to be quite honest I have no idea whos in charge of what over here and was just hoping someone with the ability would read this.........

Anyone with a badge icon can sticky a thread

Mods generally don't care about people typing in caps or requesting/demanding something to get done. It just takes a little bit of tact is all.

Ok. So a question has come up in a different thread and it is more relevant here. If you have a non-TMSS model 1 genesis, does it allow you to play at least a majority of these region locked games without a region mod being done?

I've been looking over at sega-16 on this subject. Here is a bit that I copy and pasted from over of the 34 threads over there about non-TMSS:

I know of five games released in the US that fail TMSS -- Budokan, Ishido, Onslaught, Populous, Zany Golf. Fortunately none of them use a battery backup, so they're all playable through a GG except Budokan, which still won't boot (though the Euro version apparently works fine, and one person reported having a US Budokan that would play on a Nomad).

There were also apparently at least eight Japanese cartridges that won't pass it. (I don't know if Super Daisenryaku uses a battery or a password system; if the former then it's unplayable on a Model 2 since you can't save through a Game Genie.)

So those are the games that need a non-TMSS genesis to work. Everything else needs a bypass cartridge or a region mod. Here is the response I was looking for asking directly if you still needed a region unlocking device to play foreign games:

Tmss has nothing to do with regions, it only blocks unlicensed from being played. So the few games that were not released by genesis wont work on a genesis with tmss. So to play games from other regions you would still have to install the switches.

Really, you can get past TMSS most of the time with a Game Genie; you don't even need to use a code. Of the official games, it's only the US version of Budokan that won't work, and (if it uses a battery) Super Daisenryaku won't be playable either. And for all I know, there might be a GG code for Budokan out there.

Now, pirate games are a whole different issue, and most of them have trouble on a TMSS system. Many used a development kit that trashes the TMSS register on bootup. I posted a list over at Sega-16 somewhere, based on my testing with an EverDrive + Nomad. Some of those have been patched by people like Eke-Eke, but others simply won't run on a TMSS system.

As for region lockout (which is a totally different issue as has been mentioned), I think there are Game Genie codes for just about every officially released game, but games with battery backup still won't really be playable since you can't save through a GG. Hence my copy of Soleil, sitting on the shelf until I do a region mod.

Finally, making matters even weirder, there are certain pirate games that will only run on certain versions of the Genesis hardware, and no one knows why AFAIK! They don't appear to intend to lock out non-Japanese hardware (for example), but for whatever reason it happens anyway.

But people like Eke-Eke, Azathoth, Chilly Willy, et al. can speak to this with far greater authority than I can.

Here's a list (kinda) of 32x games and their region locks.

About the list of MD games in the original post; I know it would be a complete bitch to update, but some of those games are not region locked across all systems. For instance, Streets of Rage II (US) is region locked, while the Japanese version isn't. While that doesn't apply to a whole lot of games it would be an interesting side note to figure out which ones it applies to.

So there is no doubt that you'll have to have an adapter to be able to play Contra on a PAL MD?

What I'm interested in is a list of PAL games that will work in a Sega Genesis without any issue.

I hear Zero Wing works in a Genesis... it's definitely a game I nneeeed.

^Well, define "without any issue". Some PAL exclusives will work out of the box (Sampras Tennis '96), but about 25% of them will need Game Genie codes to get past the region lockout (The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2).

With or without a Game Genie, once they've booted, almost all PAL Genesis games will work fine on NTSC. However, a small number of PAL exclusives have trouble on NTSC, like Worms (which has sound glitches) or Super Skidmarks (the screen rolls IIRC). Also, you can't save through a Game Genie, so games with lockout and batteries (like Soleil) aren't really playable.

Here's the list I have of PAL exclusives (including games that also came out in Japan, but not the US). Many of the better games have region lockout, but it's usually trivial to bypass.
