Ok so i just got a Nomad off ebay in great condition! The battery pack is dead though. I was wondering if there is anyone that is still doing the screen and battery pack mod? Id love to get a sweet screen on it. If anyone could point me in the right direction, thanks!

What do these mods do to it? I am curious as I am also trying to get my hands on a SEGA Nomad.

Here you go Dane, this is what the mods do.

There's also a switch less region mod out there that can be done aswell as an s-video out. I just picked up a nomad off eBay and would really like to get this done, unfortunately he's not doing the mods anymore.

Right!? That's what I want to do to my nomad, but I can't seem to find anyone who does it

I wouldn't mind having that mod done to my Nomad as well.... I was dissapointed with the screen when I bought mine.

So was that just a Nomad thing? That the screens generally weren't good quality? I ask as I have never played one before.

I want a LCD mod eventually. Right now, I just need to get my speaker fixed on it. lol

EDIT: A "reset button" mod, can it be done? I want to be the first ever to beat X-Men on a Nomad.

Just finished another Nomad today! I had done one a while ago, but sold that to a mate.
It has modern LCD screen (menu buttons added for adjustment), camcorder battery mod, region (USA, JPN, AU or PAL) switch-this is fitted where the contrast wheel was. I had done this since I live in Australia and having a few PAL optimised games, chose to do it this way. Also done the colour fix so that PAL games will be in colour, not b/w.

I have been trying to get my hands on a Nomad for a while. If I manage to get one how much do you charge for a full mod as you mentioned? Also, are you in Brisbane?

Here is my Nomad

LCD menu buttons

0

Region Switch

Thunder Force 4 needs to be started in AU (PAL) then switched to USA/JPN for fullscreen

Intro Streets of Rage switched on the fly to show language swap

USA Streets of Rage

This blurry pic shows Streets of Rage in PAL mode (notice black border top/bottom)

Bare Knuckle (JPN mode)

Yes I live in the Brisbane area, I typically don't do mods for other people (been stung in the past) I only do work for myself and Game Traders. I sell my modded consoles through their store at Chermside, but note that the Nomad due to it's rarity (in Australia) get's pricey as a modded unit. The one I sold to my mate (who works at the store, the console never got onto the shop floor) I got $250 for it. (Game Traders add games then put a bit on it for themselves to cover their store costs).
Price break down

Nomad
- I have/had 4 of these ranging from $100 (not to crash hot condition and will require additional work as sound is shit) to $175 (pretty bloody good condition) posted from the states. There was a guy in Australia selling a boxed Nomad a while ago for $400!

Battery Pack
- $20-25 shipped (it was around this from memory) but we only want the case for this

Camcorder battery
- $15 or so (again from memory)

Battery Charger
- $10 or so including the Australian adaptor (don't get the cheap rounded edged version, get the squared edge version. The rounded version the pins are to thin and can flop around in the power point).

Decent 3.5inch LCD screen
-$25 This is where the fun starts as I went through a few to find the right sort, I even got jibbed on the "Redguard branded version", where the seller said yes it was the Redguard brand, got it here and it didn't work on the Nomad (b/w liney picture). The first screen I tried chewed more juice than the stock screen! I found a nice screen that has a good picture, while having menu control and doesn't drink the battery. This screen has controls for bright, contrast, colorast and rotate (you can do the Atari Lynx trick and have the console upside down so the d-pad is on the right hand side)

4 pin Oscillator for colour fix.
-$5 (or close enough)

switch, wire etc
-$5

I also replace the outer screen plastic as well.

So if you pay say $130 to get a Nomad over here it would cost $215 in just parts to do. It took me about 4-5 hrs to do (I have a small TV in the room I do this in, so I chuck on a movie lol!)

I put a guide up on Sega-16 on how to do the colour fix as I don't believe that info was anywhere else at the time. Whereas the battery mod and screen mod are in a few places

$345 is a bit more than what I would be willing to pay, even though it would be worth it for sure. maybe in the future if I get my hands on one and I am in a god place financially I'll remember to give you a bell. You said GameTraders Chermside, does that mean you're a northsider also?

lol sorry, meant $215 in parts INCLUDING the Nomad ($130 Nomad + $85 parts) this is if you were to do the work yourself..

Yes I am a northsider.

Working on reset mod as well, hopefully have time to sort it out this week.

Well $215 is a lot better than $345, although I wouldn't be able to do the work myself as I wouldn't know what the hell I was doing.

After getting my Nomad and playing it I am happy with it and wouldn't really care to spend any money doing mods (not that it doesn't improve it), but I am happy with it as is:

Welcome to the Nomad club!!!! 8D Dude, and you got one in the box? Bonus points for you, good sir.

Your nomad on the looks nice, probably nicer than mine... your screen looks clearer, so I wouldn't recomend you modding it either.

Yeah I was lucky to get one boxed with original paperwork and insert all in very nice condition. I only paid about $70 for it too which was good in my opinion. I mainly got it to have on the shelf to look pretty, but I am playing it all the time in bed and on the couch when my wife is watching something horrible like Wife Swap or New Zealand's Next Top Model.
