Here's what began from my own personal list that I pulled some hair out putting together over a year or so but since working with other like minded gents listed below it has now grown into the essential NA Sega CD collectors guide.

Some of the other lists available are jumbled up with other regions and in my experience are
somewhat flawed in terms of how I need the list so in hopes of helping others who collect for
this severely underrated system specifically for North America... here you go and please feel free
to help add or correct anything about it!

*SPECIAL THANKS to a few of the people that contributed additional information, miscellaneous items, and a few variants that other collectors and I were not aware of!

surgical strike 32x was apparently released in brazil by tec toy. there's a thread in protoculture. it's an american region release so you might consider that.

i've also seen cadillacs and dinosaurs and legend of tully bodine tec toy releases on ebay.

for unreleased games, i have scans from gamepro for these unreleased titles
World Championship Rally
Indiana Jones Instruments of Chaos
RBI Baseball '95
Cyberwar

and I'm pretty sure I remeber a blurb about a game called Dark Ride or something like that. There was a screenshot of a prerendered rollercoaster ride or something.

It is really different from the SA database. The SA database has lots of errors, it list games that were never made, and it doesn't list all the variants. I have helped Shaitan to very small degree on this list and I can say, that  it is the most complete list I have found on the internet.

I will concur with timemaster (as I too have assisted to a degree on this) that it is the most complete/correct list available.

well this is something I'm not entirely 100% on but the only identifier I have for the Tec Toy release of sonic cd is a manual for it which is in Portuguese and has the logo on the manual for Tec Toy.  It came with the smaller pack-in version of Sonic CD and the disc says not for resale Other than that I don't know for sure. SO perhaps when they packed it in with the system they were selling they merely tossed in that manual?? We definitely need some verification.

right so I was reading through an interview with Victor Ireland and in the middle part of the interview the
interviewer (Zach Meston) said "Apparently, you released eight different versions of Lunar: The Silver Star,
with different CD artwork on each."

Victor mentioned that the last disc art variation was the one with the blue dot. However he also states
"However, most of the units out there now are either art 7 or 8."

Which leads me to ask why are there only 7 disc art variations accounted for? Am I misunderstanding
something here?

He was probably mistaken by the leading question. I'm sure if the guy would have said, "you released nine versions..." that Ireland would have responded with, "... either art 8 or 9." You can be certain that there are only seven discs. The fact is that he said the final one has the blue dot, and that dot certainly comes with disc seven. And they only ever showed seven arts on their website. Again, it was just a slip brought about by the context of the question.

But my concern now is that it seems, upon correcting his number slip, that he is saying that most of the units in circulation are disc arts 6 and 7. Which is contrary to current perception and doesn't seem (on gut feeling) to be wholly believable. Though that could explain why disc art 5 was the most difficult for me to find and secure.

You are undoubtedly speaking of this creature. Someone produced 21 copies of the game with box art and manual for the "Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2009." There was one of them on eBay right after the event (the one pictured here) and it sold for $255. I've yet to see another copy of this pop up anywhere, but I'm sure someone just downloaded and burned the game then packaged it nicely - not to shabby for that windfall.

All I have to say is WOW.

I want to add that there is should be sub category to collecting this list(demos).  I have a dragons lair demo disc that was sent to certain retail stores.

Does anyone have a similar list to this of US NTSC Genesis releases? I've been looking for one and I've found lists ranging from the high 600s to 718(Digital Press) to almost 900 (898?). I just recently got into Genesis and I've been looking for a straight forward list of US releases and I'm getting numbers all over the place

Thank you for the comprehensive list! I'm really happy you've posted the Lunar boxart stuff. I've had one helluva time trying to find that info. I've got the rarest disc variant, but my case has the partial foiling and no blue dot. It looks like I've got some hunting to do.

Do we have any idea which ones came with full foil and which with partial foil? I sort of assume disc variant 1 where the art doesn't go to the center matches with the no foil boxart.

And if you count them all up on GameFaqs you get 711. I agree it would be nice to see a definitive list like this, not only for the Genesis too, but for every system.

I didn't realize my comments about the art were only on sega-16 where I originally posted the four inserts.

From my experience - and as evidenced by my set as well as numerous duplicates of each I've passed over - art 1 has no foil and it appears that the even number discs (2, 4 and 6) have the full foil inserts while the odd discs (3, 5 and 7) have the partial foiling - 7 having the blue dot as well. I can't state this with 100% certainty, but it follows what I have seen the vast majority of the time.

Obviously with so many variants trolling around, it'd be easy for things to get swapped. However, what are the chances that my #7 art came in a partial foil case with no blue dot? It still matches the foil pattern, at the very least, which is why I'm wondering.

Nice work!

I'm going to start a Sega cd collection...as soon as I can find a nice CIB console for a decent price...

Zero actually. It was stated by Victor Ireland himself that the final disc came with the blue dot on the insert. And, it has been well documented and known quite some time - not something that was born recently to make the new breed of collectors dish out extra cash. I actually knew about it at least 7-8 ago when I bought my first of four copies. So the two things you can be assured of when it comes to the Lunar inserts: 1) the non-foil one and the first disc are mutually exclusive; 2) the one with the blue dot and the seventh disc are mutually exclusive. The other five discs and inserts are the only ones we aren't certain about. The only reason I mention the even/odd thing is because that's how my set is layed out, and the last variety of 15 or so I've looked at on eBay have also followed that pattern.

I've yet to see another copy of this pop up anywhere, but I'm sure someone just downloaded and burned the game then packaged it nicely - not to shabby for that windfall.

I really love to have some high res scans of the cover and manual so I could print myself off a nice copy of it.
For those interested I posted the image I have of it in the list
