Can cartridge save batteries leak/damage the circuit board? How do collectors deal with this?

So I had to clean the corrosion from a leaked battery out of an old remote control today, and it got me thinking, can the same thing happen with cartridge save batteries? Is this something any collectors here worry about, and if so how do you deal with it?

It's possible, but button cells are much less likely to leak than the AA or AAA batteries in your remote. Nothing you can do to prevent it except swap them out.

This was my original Sega CD battery last month. Button batteries can definitely leak.

Yea, that's what I was afraid of... but I guess short of replacing all the batteries in my cartridges with empty coin cell holders... probably not much that can be done.

If anyone's interested, there's a list of games with save batteries on sega-16 (there's also a list on segaretro, but it seems incomplete by comparison).
